Bush Tomato

(Solanum centrale)

Bush Tomato (also known as Desert Raisin and Kutjera) are dried berries growing in the desert areas of the Northern Territory, Central and South Australia. An important Traditional food in Indigenous culture. The small desert plant fruits are both wild harvested or from plantations. (In the wild, only ripe red coloured fruit is eaten, not green fruit!) An amazing savoury & sweet smoky, caramelised aroma, a spicy tart taste which finishes with the sweetness of a currant.

  • Bush tomatoes are a nutritious addition to cooking.
  • Bush tomatoes have a smoky caramelised tomato flavour – first tart then a sweet finish.
  • Are great married with NATIF Desert Limes to get sweet and sour flavours.
  • Add to salads, curries, salsa, pasta sauces, use in marinades, muffins, savoury tarts.
  • Add to spice mixes, fruit and nut mixes, bread mixes and use in dukka.
  • Add whole or slice into vegetable dishes and salads.
Bush Tomatoes are a good source of selenium, potassium and iron. Selenium plays a key role in metabolism and has antioxidant properties (more than blueberries). Bush Tomatoes are rich in vitamin E, folate, magnesium and calcium and have a high potassium:sodium ratio which is good for hypertension. The fresh berries also contain Vitamin C.
